Liner BondEPDM Insulation Bonding ResinRocket Lab uses EPDM based insulation systems for the majority of its propulsion schemes. EPDM offers a lower density for the equivalent ablation rates as phenolic based systems and has the advantage of being elastomeric. This is particularly important for solid fuel propulsion systems to reduce the possibility of case disbond. Rocket Lab has developed an insulation bonding resin for EPDM based systems. Extremely high peel strengths are achieved by Liner Bond between EPDM and carbon composites, aluminium alloys, steels and phenolic based composites. Liner Bond is a two part system that is applied to the EPDM surface prior to assembly. Once the EPDM insulator is installed within the camber Liner bond cures to form an elastomeric bond between the chamber and insulator. This elastomeric bond between the case and insulation further reduces the risk of propellant disbond and adds another flexible joint for thermal and structural displacements of the motor case. |
