avionicsRocket Lab has a heritage in producing high performance miniature avionics and flight computer systems for rocket vehicles. These computers are highly configurable to mission requirements and additional modules can be integrated to meet extended mission and payload needs. Fully customizable firmware ensures maximum freedom for application development.

A typical system consists of six distinct modular units that are contained within a single Aluminum enclosure.  The modular construction of the avionics platform provides the greatest flexibility, as it allows for the addition of features in the future without the need for a complete redesign of the product.  Rocket lab uses the latest in IMU and GPS technology combined with system protocols such as CAN-bus for ultra reliable and high accuracy avionics.

A standard sounding rocket system offered by Rocket Lab, (SRA) is a high performance miniature flight computer for use on sounding rockets and high velocity vehicles.  It has flight history on small sounding rockets including Rocket Lab's Ātea-1.

 

Standard features include:

 

  • Size envelope of  50mm diameter x 150mm length and total weight of 250 grams
  • Low power 32-bit microcontroller with 32KB of RAM and 256KB of flash memory for fully customizable firmware implementations
  • 4 high power switched outputs at 7.4V and 3 low power digital I/O ports at 3.3V (upgradeable to 8)
  • Micro SD memory card mounted in locking socket for extended data logging
  • High accuracy 16 channel 16-bit analog to digital converter with pins compatible for upgrade to 24-bit
  • 50G X, Y and Z axis accelerometers
  • Dual sensitivity Z axis gyroscope with 2000°/s full scale range 0.5mV/°/s sensitivity and 440°/s full scale range 2.27mV/°/s sensitivity.
  • Dual sensitivity X and Y axis gyroscope with 500°/s full scale range 2.0mV/°/s sensitivity and 110°/s full scale range 9.1mV/°/s sensitivity
  • Low power 3-axis Magnetometer
  • Onboard 2.4Ghz wireless module for close range (100m) communication with computer
  • Iridium modem (9601) short burst for standard telemetry and options for traditional RF telemetry
  • Onboard low power GPS engine for recovery - upgradeable to High Missile Dynamics GPS engine
